See Your Favorite Museums at Half Price

This February you can see your favorite museums in San Diego for half price.  It is Museum Month in San Diego.  All you need to do is head to a Macy's store and pick up a pass.  This pass is good for four people to receive half-off at up to 43 San Diego County museums.  Keep reading to find out more exciting details.

Museum Month Offers Half-Off AdmissionThis February, San Diegans can experience some of the best museums in California for half price.

Museums such as Birch Aquarium at Scripps, San Diego Air & Space Museum and the Whaley House Museum will offer 50 percent off admission with a Museum Month pass for the entire month of February.

Here’s how it works: People can pick up a free pass at any San Diego Macy’s stores throughout the month of February. The free pass is good for up to four people to receive half-off at up to 42 San Diego County museums.

People then have the chance to see iconic photography, exotic fish or bizarre items from around the world at a fraction of the usual cost.

The San Diego Museum Council started the annual tradition in 1989 to give San Diegans the chance to check out exhibits at a discount. Last year more than 35,000 people used a Museum Month pass to visit local museums.

Some highlights include the Trash exhibit at the New Children’s Museum downtown or the “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” showing at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

For a full list of participating museums, check out the San Diego Museum Council website.

Cleaning Throughout Your Daily Routine

Do you have trouble sticking to a cleaning schedule?  Check out this great article about how to incorporate cleaning into your daily routine.  This will prevent you from avoiding the tasks you hate, and it will keep your home clean all year around.
Since moving from a one-bedroom apartment to a three-bedroom house, I've struggled with staying on top of cleaning and household chores. One way that I've kept order is by making quick tasks part of my getting-ready-for-work and just-getting-home-from-work routine.

A pattern has developed naturally. After I shower, I wipe down my bathroom countertop and faucet. (If there is one area where I'm fastidiously clean, that's it.) If I've run the dishwasher the night before, I empty it as my cup of Barry's tea steeps. A little while later, on my way downstairs to go out the door, I collect any dirty cups and glasses or trash/recycling and put them where they belong. Once I'm back home in the evening, I take the first half hour or so to put things away and quickly tidy up.

As I've turned these basic tasks into habits, they feel less like chores. I still struggle to commit the time to doing things like vacuuming, mopping, and dusting everywhere, but I'm having an easier time accepting the never-ending cycle of household chores.

How do you make chores a part of your day? Do you have a cleaning schedule you stick to?

Get your walking and running shoes ready for a good cause and help locals like 15-year-old CHS freshman cheerleader Rebecca Edgin who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Edgin is one of several teens and children that will benefit from money raised at the 4th annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation “Whole Lot of Hope” 5K Run/Walk on Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. at Poinsettia Park, Thorp Field in Carlsbad.

“We have been so touched by the outpouring of love from the foundation,” said Michelle Edgin, mother. “Now, I can focus more on Rebecca and her care, and on her siblings, instead of how I to deal with all the extra medications and copays. We look forward to walking in February!”

The Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) helps families with children sufferring from life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders.

Beth and Brad Thorp created MTF in memory of their son, Mitchell, who passed away in November 2008, after a five-year battle to an undiagnosed illness. During their heartbreaking ordeal, the community held a walk-a-thon to help them. The Thorps formed MTF to continue the love and support they had experienced in their time of need.

Among the children MTF is also supporting are Amanda Barvinchak, 18, who had to forfeit her athletic scholarship, after being diagnosed with bone cancer; Levi Ryska, 3-1/2, who after recovering from a Crainopharyngioma tumor, causing pressure on his brain, is enduring several physical impairments that require ongoing physical and occupational therapies; Connor Dalby, 2, who continues to battle West Syndrome, the worst from of epilepsy that rarely responds to treatment; and the Rico children, Pria, 12, who is suffering with Recurrent Respiratory Papillmatosis, and recently had her 48th surgery on her larynx, and Tanner, 6, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

This year’s event will feature a one-mile Kids Run (5-12 years old), a 5k run/walk, the award-winning Carlsbad High School Band and cheerleaders, DJ, live entertainment, runners’ medals, raffle, prizes, vendor booths, and more. For information and to donate contact www.mitchellthorp.org or 760-603-8853.

Registration is $40 in advance or $45 day of the event.

Palomar Commons to open in Aug 2013

There will be some great new businesses coming into Carlsbad in 2013. Lowe's, Chipotle, and Five Guys are just some of the establishments slated for the development.  This new development is replacing the Olympic Resort Hotel and Spa.  The new shopping center will be called Palomar Commons, and is anchored by Lowes Home Improvement.

Where the Olympic Resort Hotel and Spa once sat, a new shopping center is underway called the Palomar Commons.

Lowes Home Improvement will anchor the 180,000-square-foot center.

Eateries including Chipotle, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Jersey Mike's Subs and Panera Bread have announced they will be at the center.

Panera is the only one of those chain restaurants that already exists in Carlsbad.

There will also be a 16-pump gas station and bank on site.

The center is slated to open in July or August of 2013. For more on the Palomar Commons and it's impact on Carlsbad, check out the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's article.
