Do
you need some ideas on how to decorate your apartment for the Holidays?
Here are 101 tips for easy, simple, and creative ways to put holiday
themes around your home this season.
1. Create a charming
display of teddy bears dressed for the season. Gather together three or
more teddy bears and arrange them on a table or on the floor in a
corner. Dress the bears with touques, scarves and mittens. Place candy
canes in their hands or tie bows around their necks. You can even wrap
up some small, empty boxes with Christmas wrapping paper to place in the
bears’ hands.
2. Display a collection of nativity scenes from different cultures.
3. Make simple bows from Christmas print ribbon and pin them to your curtains.
4.
Hang a collection of Christmas stockings on your mantle, a shelf or the
wall (even if you don’t stuff them). The more the merrier when it comes
to nice christmas decorations.
5. Revisit your childhood. Cut snowflakes from white paper and hang them in all of your windows.
6.
Buy a clear plastic shower curtain. Use a hot glue gun to attach
Christmas decorations to the outside of the curtain. Don’t use breakable
ornaments – instead, try small wooden or plastic ornaments (remove any
hooks), bows, garland, etc.
7. Use red and green 3-dimensional
fabric paints to trace simple Christmas patterns (like stars, bells,
Santas, stockings, etc.) on a white tablecloth.
8. Dress up your house plants – hang small Christmas ornaments on them.
9. Tie a red ribbon around a tall, slim drinking glass. Fill the glass with candy canes and display on a shelf or side table.
10. Purchase plain green or red place mats and attach Christmas ribbons, bows or small wooden ornaments with a hot glue gun.
11.
Fill a small glass bowl or decorative Christmas bowl with small cones
and display on end tables, shelves, buffet tables, etc.
12. For
quick ornaments, hang Christmas cookie cutters with ribbon. Hang them on
your tree or in a window so other people can enjoy your christmas
decorations.
13. Create a cookie wreath centerpiece for your
table. Just arrange Christmas cookies in a wreath shape right on the
table cloth. No need to attach them to anything ’cause everyone will
want to nibble at them. If you like, place a pillar candle on a small
plate in the center of the wreath.
14. Decorate plain red,
white, green or gold candles with 3-dimensional fabric paint. Draw
stars, bells, angels, snowmen, etc. If you make a mistake, let the paint
dry and peal it off, then start again.
15. Pile a collection of Christmas books on a side table.

In this part of the country it is warm throughout the year.
Experiencing snow is very unlikely. However, you can create a winter
wonderland right in your home. Keep reading to learn how to create snow
right in your own home.
With my husband's office Christmas party
just around the corner, I have already begun decorating. It takes a
while to get all of our Christmas items up and set in stone.
Last year, the main focus of our house for the party was the Florida
Room, which I turned into a Santa's Toyland. This year, the focus is
once again on that room but this time, I'm turning it into a snow land.
Turning any room in your house into a snow land can be fun and it
offers a slightly different twist to the more traditional Christmas
theme. I chose the Florida Room because it is the room in which my
guests most like to congregate. Additionally, the green curtains and
blue carpet lend themselves automatically to the theme.
You can do something similar for your house by using some or all of the following ideas:
Idea #1. Start the theme with the Christmas Tree. This year I scaled
back my 8' tree to allow more room for seating. Instead, I chose a
smaller, thinner 6' tree, which I decorated in keeping with the snow
land theme.
Think about placing cotton batting inside the tree
to simulate snow. To make it glisten more, accent it with aurora
borealis tinsel. Glittering snowball tinsel round around the branches
works well too.
Choose ornaments that fit in with the overall
theme. I used old world Santas, snowmen, angels and Christmas bulbs in
clear, white and silver. Then, I popped it with color by placing red
glitter poinsettias and snowflakes inside the branches as well.
Use a bow made of snowmen or a similar theme as a tree topper or pick
out a glistening snowflake or star topper instead. Even an angel will
work if you stick to clear or aurora borealis glass or plastic or choose
something done in corresponding colors.
Idea #2. Temporarily cover furniture cushions and pillows with snow themed fabric.
The floral cushions in my wicker chairs were inappropriate for my snow
land theme. So I used inexpensive ($1 yard) fabric in a snow theme to
temporarily cover them. A simple running whip stitch allowed me to
complete the job quickly. It will also make for easy removal once
Christmas is over.
To pull the fabric together with the
curtains, I replaced the curtain on my door to match the cushions. I
left the other green curtains in place and simply dangled snowflakes
from the tops of each. I also covered throw pillows in white felt and
glued matching snowflakes to the front.
You can also replace
throw pillows with store bought ones if you prefer. I added a couple
that fit in with the theme but also popped in a bit more color.
Idea #3. Cover surfaces with a blanket of snow.
I used several different kinds of materials to achieve the look I
wanted. For the large round wicker table in the center of the room I had
to use white felt. It was the only fabric I could find that was large
enough to cover the circumference. The fabric was around $5 a yard but
one yard was all I needed.
Snow blankets can be purchased for smaller surfaces almost anywhere that Christmas decorations
are sold. I used that material for my large rectangular table. These
blankets retail for anywhere from $4 to $10, depending upon their size
the features (e.g., glitter, glisten, etc.)
You can also use
cotton pull-apart stuffing to make snow banks on large surfaces to cover
really small areas. That material is inexpensive and can be found at
any arts & crafts store, at Wal-Mart or fabric stores for around $4 a
bag.
Increase the glitter factor with white glitter netting
from Michael's Arts & Crafts. It can be draped or round a surface.
The cost is about $7 per 84" by 15" piece.
Add snow flakes made from foam, fabric, or tinsel to accent the surfaces. Also think about using glittered white poinsettias.
Don't forget the snowmen. The ones I used happened to be wine bottle covers that will house Christmas gifts for some of our party guests.
Idea #4. Decorate surfaces.
I found cute little cardboard houses at Dollar Tree that doubled as
gift boxes for party guests. They were perfect for decorating the top of
one of the room's tables.
Add a bouquet of flowers or a plant to bring extra pizzazz to any surface.
Idea #5. Add some stockings on the fireplace.
Even a small fireplace in the room is still perfect for stocking
accents. The top or mantel also provides another surface upon which you
can place plants or other decorations.
Idea #6. Sit snowmen around the room.
I picked up the giant snowman pictured at a yard sale for $5. He sits inside the door to greet guests as they arrive.
Sit other woodland creatures around on the floor, between chairs, etc.
Although they are not pictured, I have the perimeters of the room strewn
with snowmen, old word Santas, reindeer and more. They cover up
extension cords, trash cans and other things I don't want attention
called to. They also add warmth and charm to the space.
Idea #7.
Pipe in music with a snow theme like "Winter Wonderland," "Frosty the
Snowman," or anything else appropriate. It will help set the mood and
help calm the guests and remove the stress of their day.
Have
fun with the theme. Get a bit wild and crazy with ideas if you want. The
whole idea is to make a fantasy room that you and your guests will
enjoy.

Now that the Election is over, it is time for everyone to relax. Here is a great delicious recipe for an apple tart that everyone should try.
Ingredients
For the pastry:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 12 tablespoons (11/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, diced
- 1/2 cup ice water
For the apples:
- 4 Granny Smith apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, small diced
- 1/2 cup apricot jelly or warm sieved apricot jam
- 2 tablespoons Calvados, rum, or water
Directions
For the pastry, place the flour, salt, and sugar in the bowl of a
food processor fitted with the steel blade. Pulse for a few seconds to
combine. Add the butter and pulse 10 to 12 times, until the butter is in
small bits the size of peas. With the motor running, pour the ice water
down the feed tube and pulse just until the dough starts to come
together. Dump onto a floured board and knead quickly into a ball.
Wrap
in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
Roll the dough slightly larger than 10 by 14-inches. Using a ruler
and a small knife, trim the edges. Place the dough on the prepared sheet
pan and refrigerate while you prepare the apples.
Peel the apples and cut them in half through the stem. Remove the
stems and cores with a sharp knife and a melon baler. Slice the apples
crosswise in 1/4-inch thick slices. Place overlapping slices of apples
diagonally down the middle of the tart and continue making diagonal rows
on both sides of the first row until the pastry is covered with apple
slices. (I tend not to use the apple ends in order to make the
arrangement beautiful.) Sprinkle with the full 1/2 cup of sugar and dot
with the butter.
Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the pastry is browned and the
edges of the apples start to brown. Rotate the pan once during cooking.
If the pastry puffs up in one area, cut a little slit with a knife to
let the air out. Don't worry! The apple juices will burn in the pan but
the tart will be fine! When the tart's done, heat the apricot jelly
together with the Calvados and brush the apples and the pastry
completely with the jelly mixture. Loosen the tart with a metal spatula
so it doesn't stick to the paper.
Allow to cool and serve warm or at
room temperature.

This elementary school has many students, staff, and parents all looking out for cancer survivors. They donated their hair to locks of love. Keep reading to learn about this heart warming story.
Andrea Revell calls them her pink angels: the 28 students, staff and parents at La Costa Meadows (LCM) Elementary who decided to donate their hair to Locks of Love. The non-profit organization makes wigs for children battling cancer Hair was cut during a school assembly on October 12.
“It’s just awesome that they are doing this,” said Revell, a kindergarten teacher at LCM who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. “I had mammograms every year like I was supposed to. Nothing came up until 2009.”
Revell’s original pink angel is Renee Mone, a second grade teacher at
the school who jumped into action right after the diagnosis.
“Mrs. Revell is one of my very best friends,” said Mone. “I took her
to chemotherapy and really started to see how a simple wig can make
such a difference when someone is fighting cancer.”
So Mone decided to organize a Locks of Love event at LCM. She and
her three daughters all donated their hair. Hundreds of people dressed
in pink applauded as pony tails and braids were cut off. Revell and
others who have either fought cancer or had a loved one afflicted, had
the honor of doing the cutting.
The school’s office manager, Ana Ruiz, chopped off Mone’s hair. Ruiz was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.
“This is just so amazing, to see all of these students and the staff being so generous,” said Ruiz.
After the cutting ceremony, five stylists gave the donors free hair cuts in the school cafeteria.
“Your beautiful hair can make such a difference,” said Mone. “It’s
just hair to us but it’s a simple gift that can make someone else
smile.”

It is only the beginning of September, but fall will soon be here. No matter where you live there is some sort of change with the seasons and these tips will get your house ready too. Read below to learn how to get yours house ready for fall on a budget.
1. Switch out bed linens. As soon as the nighttime
temperatures cooperate, ditch the summery coverlet for a heavier
comforter or duvet. It's also a good time to turn your mattress, wash or
replace any pillows that need it, and get your bed ready for snuggling
down in colder weather. To save a few bucks, pick some cozy fall-hued
fabrics, and make your own duvet! See our tips for more information: Tips for Sewing Your Own Duvet.
2. Consider switching out wall art. If you're like
me and love to constantly rearrange artwork on your walls, make this a
good time to try something new. I have lots of light, summery prints and
illustrations that I'll trade out for a wall hanging--I have lots of
quilts my grandmother made that would be perfect hanging over my mantle
for the fall season. For a neat quilt-hanging idea, see How To: Hang a Quilt Artistically.
3. Add some candles--especially the fall-scented kind!
Nothing says cozy like the glow and flicker of a flame; and for me,
nothing says fall like apple pie and pumpkin scented candles in my
living room and kitchen. It's an easy — and cheap — way to celebrate the
scents of the season; I always pick out 5 or 6 little candles to kick
off the first cool afternoon. Rather go a more DIY route? Check out 5 Simmer Pot Recipes To Make Your Home Smell Like Fall.
4. Rethink your throws and pillows for the sofa. I
like to use some of my old quilts on the couch this time of year, and
I'm also thinking about covering some of my throw pillows--maybe that
worn out pair of corduroy pants would make a fantastic pillow cover! See
How To: Sew an Envelope-Back Pillow Cover for ideas on making your own covers.
5. Ready your fireplace. If you use your
wood-burning fireplace, give it a good clean and arrange some logs and
kindling nearby. Or if you're like me, and have an unusable fireplace,
give it a little glow of its own. Last year I arranged pumpkins and
white lights; birch logs would also be nice! If you've also got a
sealed-up fireplace, get some ideas with this post on Sprucing Up An Unused Fireplace.
6. Prepare doorways with a mud tray for boots. When
the wet weather strikes — along with mud and lots of leaf litter —
you'll be grateful you did! Here are seven boot trays to get you
inspired: Practical to Pretty: 7 Boot Trays.
7. Speaking of doorways, try a new wreath — indoors or out! Use some bittersweet, or tuck leaves into a grapevine wreath. For some more ideas, see 5 DIY Ideas for Fall Wreaths.
8. Treat yourself to a new thermal mug and a fresh selection of teas.
You could even make yourself a tea station, ready to go when the urge
to indulge strikes. Need more direction in the tea department? Check out
Tea Time: Everything You Need for a Perfect Cup.
9. Spruce up your table with some fall-hued table linens or fabrics. Dark, rich fabrics can add lots of warmth to the dining table. For inspiration, see our Table Linens for Fall Roundup.
10. Bring the outdoors in. I love to decorate with
twigs and branches, and dried flowers from the end of summer.
Bittersweet and chrysanthemums are also great ways to bring the fall
colors indoors; for more ideas, see Setting the Autumn Table with Plants.

No one ever wants an emergency to happen near their home, but it is better to be prepared just in case something would happen. Carlsbad is offering free emergency guides for residents at the city libraries during September. These handbooks will have everything you need to know about emergency preparation in the City of Carlsbad.
In honor of National Preparedness Month the City of Carlsbad is making free emergency preparedness guides available to residents here and at city libraries during the month of September while supplies last.
National Preparedness Month is held each September to encourage
Americans to make sure they are prepared for disasters or emergencies in
their homes, businesses and communities. The City of Carlsbad first
created the guides in 2011, and they have proven to be very popular,
according to Emergency Preparedness Manager David Harrison. “We are
making them available again as a way to remind residents of very easy
things they can do to be prepared for a major earthquake, wildfire or
other disaster.” Harrison added that recent concerns about summer heat,
earthquake activity in Imperial County, and even hurricanes and tropical
storms in the east, have piqued interest in preparedness. The guide
features important safety tips, including:
- How to make a family emergency plan
- What should go in a home emergency kit
- What to do in an evacuation
- What to do if there is a power outage, downed or broken power lines or a natural gas leak
- How to find other emergency preparedness resources
“The city is committed to keeping our community safe—especially
during an emergency,” said Harrison. “We conduct extensive training for
our first responders and other city workers, but for our community to
be fully prepared, we need residents and businesses to be ready too.”

It is back to school time in Carslbad. This involves buying clothes, getting school supplies, and organizing everything for your kids in the morning. Here are some great tips for back to school that will also help your family be a little more green.
Making a list for the back-to-school shopping? Consider focusing on what's good for the environment.
Waste Management of San Diego offers four Mother Nature-friendly habits worth adopting this school year.
- Pack a lunch with reusable gear: Buy a reusable lunch box or recycle those brown paper bags. Doing this will also help families save money on food.
-
- Purchase products made from recycled materials: Buy products that can be recycled like an ink-cartridge that can be refilled rather than buying a new one.
-
- Utilize carpools or public transportation: Team up with another family and carpool your children to school. Or even better, use public transportation.
-
- Turn off and unplug appliances when you are not using them: Turn off those desktop computers, lights and other appliances when you're not using them.

It is back to school time in Carlsbad, which means kids will be crossing the street and playing outside. This means it is time for parents, drivers, and citizens to be extra careful when driving around town. The Carlsbad Police are offering some important safety tips to keep ourselves and children safe during the school year.
With kids throughout Carlsbad heading back to school, the City of Carlsbad Police Department offers these important safety tips:
- Serve as a role model with safe driving habits
- Slow to 25 miles per hour and be especially alert while driving near a school
- Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, medians and curbs
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully

driving are illegal.
- Follow basic safety rules
- Use seat belts, car seats or booster seats for children
- Use the crosswalk to cross the street. Do not jaywalk
- Pay attention to school buses. If the bus is stopped, there might be children exiting or entering

- Teach them how to cross the street at corners and in crosswalks. Watch a video about crosswalk safety.
- Use a crossing guard to cross the street, when available

The
Boys and Girls of Carlsbad will hopefully be letting the 150 children on the
wait list into their building soon.
A surprise fundraiser was held to help complete the extension they are
building in what they call “the barn”
The fundraiser raised 1 million dollars in an hour with some of the top
companies in the area.
Nearly 150 children wait patiently on a list
to be able to go to the Boys
& Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. "We hope to wipe out the waiting list
of 148 children early in 2013," said Club CEO Brad Holland.
Currently, the Clubhouse is partially open
and serves 100 children daily. While construction started more than four years
ago, the building is still more than a million dollars away from being done.
Five million has already been raised and spent on the project.
"There’s about 10,000 square fee that
we call the “barn.” Basically it is just a shell and the interior is
unfinished. These include all of the programming rooms as well as
administrative offices. Currently only the gym and Teen Center are completed
and in use," explained Pat Maldi Director of Marketing and Special Events.
She added in an email, "we use the Teen Center for all ages at this time
because of the limited space."
On July 31, the Boys & Girls Clubs of
Carlsbad got a wonderful suprise. TaylorMade, a
Carlsbad-based golf
company, held an exclusive event for 45 of the area’s top business
executives, rallying them to give to
one
of TaylorMade’s charities of choice – the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad.
The event raised nearly $1 million in less than one hour, which will go
directly to complete the Bressi Ranch Clubhouse.
Maldi said they have met with their
contractor and will begin the last phase of construction the first week of
September.

It is time for back to school, which means it is time for the argument between parents and child about what to bring for lunch. Most kids want to buy school lunches, which are not always healthy and can be expensive for families. However, there is a way to save your family money and also to keep your children happy.
Sending the kids back to school often means re-establishing structure
in my life as well as the kids’ lives. We are going to bed earlier,
getting up earlier, watching less TV and packing lunches. When the
schedule gets out of hand, the packed school lunch is usually the first
thing to go in our house.
But not this year! Buying a lunch everyday at school for our two
children would cost us about $875 for the year - not to mention that
buying lunch at school is not usually the healthiest choice. So this
year I have a School Lunch Money and Time-Saving Game Plan.
First, I laid the groundwork for the plan. Each child will pack his
or her own lunch at least three days a week. I got the kids interested
by letting them decide what goes in their lunch. Each Sunday we sit
down and look at the school menu and decide what two days each child
will buy lunch. Then, we discuss what the children want to pack for
their lunch on the other days. They each get to pick one protein, one,
fruit, one grain and one veggie for their daily lunch. All items must
have at least some nutritional value.
Then, I assemble the items in individual servings and they all go
into one drawer of the refrigerator, even the shelfable items go in the
drawer. Then every evening before dinner, each child opens the drawer,
picks the lunch items and packs his or her own lunch for the next day,
and I save money and time.

Five Programs will receive generous grants from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. This foundation is an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation. Read more about the grant recipients below.
Carlsbad Community Theatre Showcase Company - $18,613
The goal of the year-round program is to create, establish and
develop a house company to provide continued performing arts education
and performance opportunities for Carlsbad youth ages six to 18.
Carlsbad Music Festival - $15,080
Grant money will create a dedicated “Community Stage” for this
year’s Festival at a location within the Village providing a stage for
local performers and a weekend of free, high-quality music performances
to the citizens of Carlsbad.
The Hacienda Project - $25,238
The Hacienda Project will create four site-specific dances at the
Magee Park by members of San Diego Dance Theater in collaboration with
the Dance Program at La Costa Canyon High School.
Trained tour guides will lead up to 1,000 students and the general
public to view these world-premier dances, which will be loosely strung
together to create a narrative of the hacienda period in California’s
history.
Harps in the City $15,663
Harps in the City will include a pilot music mentorship and education program for the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club,
collaboration with professional harpists, outreach to area senior
centers, and the commissioning of a community art project involving
local visual and performing artists.
Shakespeare Network - $32,809
Support allows for New Village Arts to
bring professional Shakespeare to all residents and the mentoring and
growth of the Junior Ensemble. The expansion includes creating three
"out of theatre" productions including one at the Pacific Ridge School in the summer of 2012, at the Dove Library in the early spring of 2013 and at the Flower Fields in the summer of 2013.
The grants celebration also marked the first distribution of grants in Carlsbad from the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here Matching Program.
The late Matt McLaughlin of Rancho Bernardo left a generous legacy gift
to The San Diego Foundation for use by the Affiliate Foundations in
North County. Thanks to the creation of the matching program, all CCF
membership generated grantmaking funds (half of each yearly donation)
will be matched, dollar for dollar, for at least three years. The Live
Here, Give Here match doubled this year’s grants, from $53,701 to
$107,403.
“Thanks to the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here program,
we were able to give out a record number of grants and dollars this
year, funding all five of the proposals recommended by our hardworking
grants committee,” said Hollyce Phillips, CCF Board Chair.
